Windows Server - Slow logon to server 2008r2
Asked By minime

HI all.
One of our users has reported that it is taking between 40-60 minutes to log
onto the server after entering credentials.
server 2008r2, fully patched
vista x86, all patched aprt from SP2
What's changed:
Folders have been recently redirected to the server however all other users
are logging on approx 1mins except this user.
He's had some issues in the past with Outlook 2007 due to his pst file being
4.23GB so would this be the reason as the apps data folder is being
redirected too?
Many thanks to those wishing to help.

Hello minime,
Let's start with DNS settigns to exclude this as a major problem. Please
post an unedited ipconfig /all form the Server and the client.
Best regards

Just to add...If i log on locally to this vista businessx86 laptop (cat5e not
wifi) with admin creds then logs on fine...the problem is when logging on as
this specific user.

Thanks Meinoir.
As mentioned only this user is the problem child and after this user has
logged on the Welcome screen appears with the circle going for 40-60mins with
the hdd activity led flashing away on the laptop:

have you checked profile size? I think it should be no more than several Mb.
try to enable profile logging on this pc and look at the actual log (a new
key should be added to the registry). google it.
if roaming profile is used - delete local cached copy of the profile.
offline files? do you use them - might influence as well.

I am currently off-site so disbaling RRAS services would cause some issues.
Once on-site I can do this....how will this enable IP Routing?
The PST file is local and not being worked on from the network ( the Apps
Data Folder is being Redirected to the server which contains the .PST file,
among other info. Some suggest disabling this but as we do not have exchange
but POP3 we would like some method to backup our .PST files to the server
although i agree they should be under 2GB.
DaveMills replied to minime
Do you mean this is a terminal server login and the redirection is to a local
folder. If not then it must be over the network.
Later version of outlook support > 2.0GB
Remember the PST file is modified every time outlook opens it. Thus all 4GB will
need to be synchronised if this is an offline file.
minime replied to Sergiy Grykshtas
Copied the .pst file to the local Documents folder (which is Redirected to
the server) then updating Outlook of this location, disabling App data Folder
Redirection, updating gpo's then compacting the .pst files then after 2
logons are is running smoothly....for now.
Thanks for listening.
