Windows Server - Updates are installed in the wrong order

We are running a WSUS 3.0 update server. It has IE8 and WinXP SP2 both
approved for installation.
The installation of IE8 does not give any errors. Immediately after the IE8
update is done the computer tries to install SP3. The SP3 installation takes
forever (over 2 hours on a C2D machine), after which the machine is
restarted. After the restart everything is like before the udpates, i.e IE8
and SP3 are not installed. wuactl immediately tries to install IE8 and SP3
again and the above continues.
We have tried installing SP3 manually before IE8 which solves the
installation problem. So the question is: Has this behavior already been
observed by someone. Are there any solutions?
BTW> the logs do not show any errors at all.

And is, in fact, the order in which you should be installing these updates.
Probably anybody who is erroneously tried to install IE8 on an XPSP2 system.
Install major updates in the correct chronological order, as you have now
discovered. :)
