Windows Server - Cannot connect workstation to SBS2008 using http://connect
Asked By lost tech on 24-May-10 08:12 PM
I am in the process of replacing the existing server 2000 on a workgroup
network and changing over to a SBS 2008 domain based network. I got the new
server on the network and used Internet Connection from the SBS Console to
work OK. Now my problem is that when I use the Connect Computer wizard using
found message. I changed the workstation from the workgroup to the domain. I
then logged in to the workstation with an administrator account. I can use
Network Places and gain access to the new server but cannot connect with the

Hi Lost Tech:
Understand your frustration. Can you tell us what the OS of the stations
is, and if the SBS 2008 is patched up to UR4?

Lost Tech is the SBS2008 The DHCP of your Network?
If not, it needs to be.

This might help if you are not using SBS 2008 as the DHCP server of the
network.

No offense to Chris Puckett.
But I need to step up on my Soap Box....
His Suggestion will work
(However I believe it is a temp Band-Aid and can bite you in the future if
you leave this.)
I suggest Un doing the DNS Settings after you do this.
This will prevent future issues with PC's (Trouble Shooting)
If you move them to another Subnet or Domain.
Leaving it this way and not remembering will cause you HOURS of
Head-Aches...
(If you forget to check what you changed.)
This especially needs to be Undone on Laptops because Most likely you DNS
will not be the same.
(Laptops of course need to be connected via WIRE and you temp disable Wi-Fi
and Bluetooth cards.)
My Best Advise is to Make the SBS The DHCP and DNS
(Which is the way SBS2008 is designed)
If you have issues temp Change the DNS on the PC to connect.
Undo that change after connection is made.
As I said Leaving things will bite you big time later.
If http://companyweb does not work after this.
(And you still have the DHCP on the Firewall)
You can try Pointing the DNS of the firewall BACK to the IP of the SBS
and the DNS of the SBS to Out side (Like OPENDNS)
This sometimes works.
However like we have said, in SBS2008 is is preferred to have it be the DHCP
and DNS of your environment.
And doing a IPCONFIG /ALL in a DOS prompt from a PC
should show the results of the SBS as the DHCP and Primary DNS
Thanks

No offense taken. I agree that using the SBS 2008 DHCP server is the way to
go.

Problem with customizing things
is that the client forgets
Calls me in a EMERGENCY!
I fix it, and when I tell them it was something simple
that was a custom config outside of standard.
They are kind of upset...
KISS is the best Motto :)
Thanks

The workstations are all XP Pro and currently have static IP addresses. Also
the SBS2008 is updated with all of the latest updates. I know that this
system works because I originally had the server and a workstation in my shop
and set it up on the domain. I tried several times and each time it was
successful. Theoretically it is the same as I tried to duplicate the
business. Only when I took the server to my client did I start to have
problems.

The SBS2008 is configured as the DHCP. This was accomplished when I ran the
Internet Connection wizard from the SBS Console.

Just wanted to let you all know that I got the problem resolved. I am
converting the workstations one at a time to the new domain where they are
utilizing both the domain and workgroup. I have to keep the workgroup server
on line because of the data files. Once all of the workstations are on the
domain I will transfer the data to the new domain server and remove the
workgroup server. Thank you for your assistance on this perplexing problem.
All is perfect.

Glad it is working
Dynamic IP's on PC's I'd recommend also...
Makes things easier :)
