Windows Server - SBS2008 - Setup your internet address Port warning

Asked By jdc

No matter what I do with my router, and I have tried 2 different ones, when I
run the Setup your internet address wizard, enter my domain and se it to use
mail.domain.com, i get a warning that the server cannot open ports 25, 80,
443, and 987. I am NOT actually running this wizard form the IP that is
configured on the Domain's MX record. Is this why? When I bring the Server
to the site where it will be implemented and run the wizard, will it complete
when the MX points back to the IP that is correct for the Domain? Please
advise. Also ... I am used to running localhost/echange on the sbs2003
server to access OWA. How do I access OWA on the SBS2008 server?

Thanks.

It has nothing to do with the MX record. The wizard uses upnp to connect to
the router to configure it. If the router does not support the same upnp
implementation or have upnp enabled it will not work. In that case, you can
ignore the warning and configure the router manually.

Ignore it
and set the ports manually...
it is one of those things that looked like a good idea on Paper

Or, enable UPnP, let SBS do its thing, and then immediately disable it on
the router.

OK, so if I have configured my routers firewall to allow these ports, but the
router does not support upnp I will get these errors no matter what?

Do i need to run this wizard to setup the alias mail.domain.com? Can I set
this up another way manually, as in adding an Accepted Domain in Exchange
System Manager?

Also - HOW do I run OWA form the SBS2008 Server?

I have had UNpN Routers even give a "FAIL"
on the wizard saying a port is not open...

In my experience sometimes yes and sometimes no.

Since it sounds like you are new to SBS2008
I recommend some books before you continue.

Recommended Books:

issues.

Those are links to Amazon, but you can pick them up at your local borders or

(Might even find a copy at the Library.)

Yes, not all UPnP implementations are compliant. And none should be left
enabled after the wizards are done.

It is NOT 'erroring'. It is an information item only, informing you that the
router has UPnP disabled, as should be.

and the problem is?

hmmmm, Charlie. Most times if I let a router be configured by UPnP and then
disable UPnP the rules created by UPnP get deleted, as I consider correct.

Have you actually tried doing as you advise? With which routers please?

I did this on my D-Link DIR-655 during the beta of SBS 2008 while I was
writing the book. Just to be sure it worked. And it worked fine. I started
out with a default setup on the DIR-655, default install of SBS 2k8, ran the
Connect to the Internet wizard and it configured the router. Once everything
was settled down and stable, I went in to the router and disabled UPnP and
everything still worked fine.

I have seen the same behaviour on a different DIR-655 I am using for Windows
Home Server here. I let WHS configure it, and then when it was done,
disabled UPnP. But since that time, I have manually reconfigured the router to
point some functionality to a different server on the WHS network, so if I
were to make the mistake of enabling UPnP, it would hork my custom setup.
