Sharepoint Permissions Shot on SBS 2008

Asked By GameCharmer

Hey everyone, I have some serious Sharepoint 3.0 Issues.

For starters, after the upgrade to Sharepoint 3.0, the Windows Search Server
went down, along with all site access. I spent hours bringing every site
back online, but I have no access whatsoever to the Sharepoint Admin. I get

I have read hundreds of articles online for fixing this issue and they all
say to login as another user and delete and re-add the broken user account.
What do you do when all user accounts are broken?

Also, when going to the Sharepoint admin panel, it will take me to
http://server:port/_admin/SearchServerWizard.aspx before bouncing to the
access denied page. I have been pulling my hair out for over a week now and
have yet to figure any of it out.

So far I have tried completely uninstalling Search Server and Sharepoint,
following up with a fresh install of Sharepoint 3.0. Unfortunately, even
after complete uninstalls and a server restart, I keep getting sent to the
SearchServerWizard.aspx file which crashes! So, I reinstalled Search Server
and finally get the Access Denied message.

The main admin account I use, as well as all user accounts that are in the
Domain Admins user group have Sharepoint Admin access in Active Directory.
I am running Windows SBS 2008 with SP2 installed.
I am running Windows Sharepoint Services 3.0
I also have Windows Search Server Express installed.

Any help in regaining access to my Sharepoint install is greatly
appreciated! :)

~Mitch

Assuming you are a Microsoft Partner
I'd call Microsoft and get Product Support on this ASAP
1-888-455-7422
Have your MS Partner ID ready

If you are not a MS partner
Call your SBS Rep you have on Speed dial have them call MS
To me this is a critical down issue....

We are not a Partner, nor do we have a SBS rep.

We are not a Microsoft Partner, nor do we have a SBS rep. We purchased
Windows SBS 2008 from an online vendor (Newegg) and have been using it for
around a year now.

We do not use sharepoint a lot, but it would be nice to get it working again.

I have double and triple checked all Active Directory permissions for the
SBS site, but from looking at the IIS Manager, there is no SBS site at all,
just the standard Sharepoint sites.

I will still never understand why the configuration for Sharepoint is a
website of Sharepoint that uses Sharepoint permissions. Everything online
says to log into sharepoint to configure sharepoint. The problem is that I
cannot login to configure it to let me login! :P

Thanks for the reply!

Search server express can totally blow up Sharepoint as you have found
out yourself and should not be installed on the same box as SBS.

How good of a backup do you have?

You have a choice

1. Work with a Small Business Specialist (or Certified/Gold Certified
Partner). We have ability to open business-critical tickets with
Microsoft. A Registered partner who is not an SBSC does not have that.
2. Open an emergency ticket with Microsoft for $490 (last I checked)
unless you have software assurance, which you probably do not. it is $259
if you do not treat it as an emergency and are OK with an 8hr callback.
3. Revert the server to condition prior to the update which broke it.

If option 3 is impossible, then you should probably go with option 2 and
spend some time testing backup recovery scenarios.

Unfortunately, my backup does not extend beyond a few weeks, so Search
Server is included in the backups. I have recently regained the front ends
of the sharepoint sites that do not require authentication, such as
a matter of spending days pouring over KB articles and using the SBS BPA to
help alleviate issues. Currently, the BPA is reporting 0 issues! And it
only took a week to fix them. :P

Anyway, that last line is particularly scary. Backups are one thing this
company does not care too much about. Heck, the system uses the standard SBS
backup and backs up to an internal hard drive. There is 1 offsite backup
that is held by the owner's wife, but she refuses to bring the dang thing
back in so I can put a new backup on it!

Thanks!

Considering that the company does not feel it is necessary to get running
what they do not understand, there is $0 to fund anything. I will try a few
Sharepoint forums and see if anyone knows anything about the SQL structure
for Sharepoint. Since everything for Sharepoint is more or less stored in
ASPX files and in the MS SQL database, I should be able to hack and slash my
way through the MS SQL database structure. I am at home right now, but
offhand I believe my config table is along the lines of Sharepoint_Config.

There is no information in Sharepoint, so there is no need to worry about
destroying Sharepoint data if anyone has any ideas on messing with something
along those lines. Since it is already "broke" it cannot get any worse.

Thanks for the suggestions though!

Beware.

1. There is a Sharepoint mvp that hears SBS and shoos you back over here

2. There is some SBSism under the hood.

Look here:

I have gone through the reinstall procedure for that once before with no
luck. :(

Since we do not really use it, I am not going to worry about it. I can wait
for the next version of SBS to come out before I start working on it.
Instead of a migration, I will do a full reinstall of everything.
Thankfully, all of our data can easily fit on a 2TB external. We are running
XP and Windows 7 on our network, so it should not be too hard to change 12
computers and a couple of printers over to a new server. :)

Thanks for the help!

I ran a full backup before attempting the reinstall.
I ran through the reinstall.
Backups completely fail.
I reverted the backup.
UPDATE!
GameCharmer replied to GameCharmer

UPDATE!

Here is my current status...

I finally got the SearchServerWizard.aspx file to actually load.
I installed SQL Server 2008 and configured it properly.
I told the Search Server to use the new SQL Server 2008 instance.
The search server actually completed installing with no errors!!!

Anyway, daily backups are failing and when I run the backups by hand they
fail as well. it is all falling on the Sharepoint VSS Writer.

When I run the vssadmin list writers they are all showing up as OK.

Is there anything I can do to completely disable the Sharepoint VSS writer
so that my backups can work again?

We do not use sharepoint at all, so I could care less if it gets backed up.
I just want to get my backups working again.
