SBS 2003 & Sharepoint 3.0 & SMTP

Asked By atech

History:

SBS 2003 R2, all windows updates, etc.
Installed Sharepoint 3.0 side by side.
Testing email alert features. Notice emails not going out.
I am not versed with IIS at all. Tried a couple of things then decided to
re-install IIS SMTP component.

NOT GOOD.

Found that I had damaged the IIS / Exchange Server SMTP service extensions
and they had not been restored.

I used KB822939 & Q320202 to resolve the problem with Exchange. (Un-install
and re-install IIS and Exchange), It took two tries before it worked.

However my orginial problem still exists. No emails going out from the
Sharepoint 3.0 site. In the event log I find the follow informaiton:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Windows SharePoint Services 3
Event Category: E-Mail
Event ID: 6858
Date: 2/1/2010
Time: 10:15:39 AM
User: N/A
Computer: MS-FS0
Description:
An error occurred while talking to SMTP host ?????.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

So I research the error message, and find there is NO smtp virtual server in
the IIS Manager. I research that problem and find
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/555030, which advises me to
register a dll, I do that and still no smtp virtual server in the IIS
Manager. Method 2 recommends re-installing IIS, I have done this a few times
already over the weekend.

What can I do to get this to work?

I have posted this question in a couple other SBS forums/groups. If you are
reading this twice, please ignore.

Thanks all!

You cannot.

You cannot. Because sharepoint 2 is required for SBS integration, it takes
over the exchange email tie-ins. Period.

This is a documented limitation in the side-by-side installation as
documented on the SBS blog and more fully in the side-by-side installation
documentation from MS.

Thank you for the link. We worked from the TechNet document Installing Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 on a server running windows small business server 2003. The document does in fact mention the limitation. We overlooked the limitation when we read the documentation.

The documentation specifically states, "The integration of incoming e-mail with Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 does not work because of a conflict with Exchange." What about the configuraiton of the Outgoing e-mail?

Hello,

Thanks for your post and Cliff's good input.

Yes, when you set up email-enabled lists with WSS 3.0, the functionality depends on the SMTP service taking incoming emails and putting them in the SMTP drop folder. The
Sharepoint Timer then wakes up periodically and processes the emails in the drop folder.

You cannot set up incoming email when SharePoint 3.0 is installed on a server running exchange 2003 (or an SBS2003), when you try to configure email setting with WSS 3.0
you get an error message that SMTP is not installed, however server is running exchange 2003. One recommendation is to set SMTP server as a different server and remain
WSS 3.0 running on SBS. Small Business Server installs Exchange Server 3.0 which then listens on port 25, intercepting incoming emails. Exchange 2003 cannot be easily
configured to drop email into the SMTP Service drop folder. You would use an event sink to do the same thing.

In addition, here is an article that people provide steps to configure Outgoing emails settings via SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration for WSS 3.0.

Installing WSS 3.0 on SBS 2003 Standard

Hope this helps.

Given that you square away your SMTP virtual server issue (did you? any
idea how that happened?), it should not be a problem. Short version: SP
Admin, in "Outgoing E-Mail Settings," input your SMTP server name and the
desired return-email address.
