Windows Server - NTBackup failing on Exchange (SBS2003 R2)
Asked By thedriver (Tee)

Hi,
Our backups (using NTBackup) are failing on Exchange. The storage media is
Sony TAIT2-80N (80 GB / 208 GB).
Our Exchange databases and streaming files are 32GB in size.
This initially appears to be an issue of too much data for the tape. But
even if I backup to an external hard drive (with over 200GB free space) I get
the same result, so it something other than space.
The backup log is as follows:

The logs you post are not consistent with a "not enough room on the tape"
diagnosis.
They do suggest that there is a problem with your Exchange stores, or just
possibly a problematic 3rd-party interaction with them.
I'd start by disabling or uninstalling any 3rd-party extensions to
Exchange (eg disclaimer software, anti-spam add-ins, that sort of thing),
and making sure that any server AV is not touching any of the Exchange
data folders.
Then try and run an Exchange backup. If it still fails, you need to do an
integrity check of the stores with ESEUTIL /G.
Post back what you find.

As I believe it is a 3rd party app causing it as well, as I have indicated.

Hello,
Thanks for your post and suggestions from Ace and Steve.
I also agree that based on my experience, this issue usually occur if Norton Anti-virus (NAV) Enterprise version was running on the server and was scanning the MDBDATA folder where affected
databases were. Once that was stopped, the backup might complete. To exclude Exchange server sensitive folders/files from AV software, you may refer to KB823166 below:
823166 Overview of Exchange Server 2003 and antivirus software
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;823166
BTW, This issues happens if the following services are started
1. Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider
2. Volume Shadow Copy
By default these services are set to manual. Please check and stop these two services and the see if backup complete successfully this time.
Hope this helps. Also, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to let me know.
Best regards,
Robbin Meng(MSFT)

Thank you Ace, Steve and Robbin for your help. Sorry I have taken so long.
Unfortunately, I have not been able to resolve this yet. Here is some updates...
I have looked at all programs installed on the server and the only Exchange
related program is the Antivirus and the Microsoft AutoAccept Agent (but this
was installed since the problem started).

MS KB 318429 - the event log does not display any -613 error messages. The
error in the event log is -2226 (see below)
MS KB 840013 - only relates to Exchange 2000
MS KB 889528 - only relates to Exchange 2003 SP1 (Exchange SP2 is installed)
Our email exclaimers are built into the signature, so there is no extra
software that adds this.
Seemingly, the most helpful error or event log seemss to be the following:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: ESE
Event Category: Logging/Recovery

It still needs to be disabled or removed.
What's this?
All of these are Exchange-related.
Do these connect into Exchange in any way?
I cannot see why any of these would be on the server (they are not there OOB).
Some of these offer general guidance and background information that is
valid across more than one version of Exchange, even though the prescribed
fixes are for specific versions. As for 889528, it is worth getting the
update, even if just to make sure that it is installed as part of SP2 (it is
not always the case!).
What adds the signatures?
What was the result of the ESEUTIL /G you were asked to run?

SBS2008 + searching large mailbox Windows Server Have an SBS2008 installation. The company has a Mail Archive mailbox which is around 8GB their PC's it takes a very very long time. However on their previous SBS 2003 server in Exchange 2003 it was taking nowhere near as long and searching was almost instant. Any ideas why mailbox seems to be performing so mich slower than it was before on their SBS 2003 setup ? The new hardware for the SBS2008 is HP ML350G6 18GB RAM which is much faster than their old SBS 2003 server. Only other major change to their PC setup is their AV was upgraded from

Why does exiting "server management" exit my Terminal Server session? Windows Server Hi All, I have never seen this weird behavior before. I have a customer with a SBS2003 Terminal Server. In start up, it has an icon for Management). Okay, no problem. I have seen this before. But, on this particular server, when you exit "server management", you also exit your Terminal Services' session (same as Logout). What a pain in the neck! So, I erased "server management" from Start Up and now no log out problems with any other program. But
