Windows Server - Initial Workgroup to Domain migration

Asked By eggomiego

Hi there. I am being forced to move to a domain since my company is
growing. I have a few questions. Can I put a server in a router
configuration? Or should the server be handling the DHCP? I cannot host
my email from within my offices, so I have a Hosted Exchange Solution,
how can I tie this into a domain? Last but not least, How do I move all
my users files and settings to the domain? Thank-you.

Hello,

Thanks for your post and Cris' input.

As Cris pointed, please let us know if you are installing Windows Small Business Server(SBS) 2003 or SBS 2008, instead of the Windows Server?

If you are referring to Windows Small Business Server, I would like to provide some information for your reference:

Question: I want to switch from using my existing DHCP server, such as a router device, to using Windows Small Business Server 2003 as my DHCP server.
Suggestion: You must disable the existing DHCP server, install the DHCP Server service on your computer running Windows Small Business Server 2003, and then configure the DHCP scope for your
network. Using Windows Small Business Server 2003 as your DHCP server ensures that your DHCP settings are properly configured for the local network. Not all DHCP scope options for the Windows
Small Business Server network can be configured for the DHCP service of all router devices.
For information about how to install and configure DHCP on your Windows Small Business Server network, open Help and Support and search for "Installing a DHCP server."

Thanks. Sorry for any confusion. Ill try to be clearer. Im currently
under no server software. I want to set up a server, and want to have
all my computers under this domain. One of my most important questions
was how to move all my users files and settings to the server. Secondly,
I wanted to know how and if I can use the Hosted Exchange on the
computers, Since i cannot host email from in house. I will look into the
Server foundation software. Thank you.

Office 2007 slow to open files stored on SBS 2003 Windows Server Hi, I have a problem with a SBS 2003 customer. We recently replaced two XP Pro clients with new 64 bit Windows 7 clients on which we have installed Office 2007. They are seeing 10 - 15 second delays when opening Word or Excel files held on the Small Business Server. I am currently trying to solve this by adding the .local domain name to the
