Because I have a lot of Event id 8331 errors I wish to install SBS SP (or
Exchange SP) on my SBS 2003 server. How ever I have allready installed:

Win Server 2003 SP2
Win SharePoint Services SP3

Which SP shoul I choose? Regarding SBS SP1 Instructions on:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/0/f/e0fee8ce-768d-41c0-8871-9bc48e0b3fc3/ToDownLoadFilesandReadInstructions.htm

I should first install severall several other SPs:

Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1
Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 Service Pack 1
Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1
Windows XP SP2 for Client Deployment
and finally
Windows Small Business Server 2003 Service Pack 1

Is it so that I can start from Exchange SP1 Installation because I have Win
Server SP2 and SharePoint Server SP3 allready Installed?

You need to have SBS 2003 SP1 fully installed. While it's possible to
install SBS 2003 SP1 with Win2003 SP2, since Windows 2003 SP2 can introduce
some additional network configuration problems, my own preference would be
to uninstall Windows 2003 SP2, install Windows 2003 SP1 (and the other
prerequisites for SBS 2003 SP1), then install SBS 2003 SP1 and make sure
it's stable. At that point, you can upgrade to Windows 2003 SP2, if
necessary.

You can substitute Exchange 2003 SP2 for SP1 in the upgrade procedure below.

Order the SBS 2003 SP1 Premium CD3 anyway because it won't be available
after Dec 31, 2007 (offer ends in 6 weeks). This get's you a free upgrade
to ISA 2004 for the cost of the shipping charge. All other required
downloads for the upgrade to SBS 2003 SP1 are still available online.

Hi

I really don't want to uninstall 2003 server SP2. I was very difficult to
successfully install it (had to open a case with MS support). So I just
decided to install Exchange SP1 and it looks like it is working now. I will
wait several days to see if 8331 errors come back.

Should I try to Install XP SPs and SBS SP1 in this situation next? Or Am I
going to bad direction now?

Thanks,

Juha

Your SBS server is in an unsupported state if you have Windows 2003 SP1 or
SP2 installed without SBS 2003 SP1. I'm thinking there are things under the
hood that don't work now, you just haven't seen them yet.

Use this link to install SBS 2003 SP1, substituting Windows 2003 SP2 for
Windows 2003 SP1, and Exchange 2003 SP2 for Exchange 2003 SP1.

NOTE: Prior to installing SBS 2003 SP1, download, install and run a scan
with the SBS 2003 BPA to see where you stand now:

Thank you very much Merv

1. To be sure what you mean. Did you mean that I should first uninstall Win
Server 2003 SP2? And then install Windows 2003 SP1?
2. I don't have installed Exchange 2003 SP2 but Exchange 2003 SP1 is there.
So NOP?
3. When I have Windows successfully 2003 SP1 installed next I install
install SBS 2003 SP1?
4. I wasn't able to open your link but I will try to check it later:

Correct?

Hi Juha,

Sorry about the link. I posted the wrong one and it seems that Mariette's
web site is now down (I think she's moving to a new server). So, let's use
Andy Goodman's web site for the procedure to install SBS 2003 SP1. (It
should be the same document, maybe just not as pretty).

The procedure involves installing the following in the order given in the
document. It's important to read the entire document and follow it
precisely to make sure SBS 2003 SP1 is installed properly at the end.

Windows Server 2003 SP1 (or WIndows 2003 SP2)
Exchange 2003 SP1 (or Exchange 2003 SP2)
Windows SharePoint Services SP1
Windows Small Business Server 2003 Update KB891193 for Windows XP Service
Pack 2
Windows Small Business Server 2003 SP1

Procedure to Install SBS 2003 SP1
http://www.sbs-rocks.com/sbs2k3/SBS_SP1_by_the_SBS_MVPs.htm

WINDOWS 2003 SP2
While you *should* be able to substitute Windows 2003 SP2 for Windows 2003
SP1, SP2 can potentially introduce some additional network configuration
problems that need to be resolved. Therefore, I prefer to get SBS 2003
installed with Win 2003 SP1. Some have posted that starting with WIn 2003
SP2 has presented no problems with installing SBS 2003 SP1. So, it's your
call. If your server is running OK with Windows 2003 SP2, you can keep it
installed and just apply the rest of the required stuff for SBS 2003 SP1
upgrade.

EXCHANGE 2003 SP2
Since you have Exchange 2003 SP1 installed, you can upgrade to Exchange 2003
SP2 after you get SBS 2003 SP1 installed.

Thanks again

Will carefully read the linked document. Because I have shatePoint Services
SP3 installed should I first uninstall it?

As I told I just had a a case opened with MS regardins SP installatons.
Funny they didn't let me know anything like this we discuss here. The MS
engineer seemed to be very busy though.

I *think* you should be OK with Sharepoint SP3 instead of Sharepoint SP1.

I'm curious about something, if you... rt. click My Computer | Properties |
General (tab), what does it say under the "System" heading?
