config.vbs missing - ICW.exe won't run -> Unspecified Error

Asked By killbra

Hi all..

Just came into a situation where the SBS 2003 installation has been in
place for a while. When I tried to run the CEICW Wizard, it just
gives me a single dialog box stating "Unspecified Error".

After a little bit of digging, I discovered that there is no
config.vbs on the system. When I manually run ICW.exe, I get the same
message "Unspecified Error", and can only click ok. This produces no
error in the Event Log. Please help, I am at a loss!

Hi Brad,Thanks for posting our newsgroup.

Hi Brad,

Thanks for posting our newsgroup.

From your description, I know that when you run the CEICW wizard, you get
error "Unspecified Error". Also you cannot find config.vbs file. If that's
not right, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Based on my research, config.vbs file has the information about networking,
firewall, Web site publishing, and e-mail. It is created automatically when
the Configure E-mail and Internet Connection Wizard is run for the first
time on a Windows Small Business Server. The file can be found in the
%systemroot%\Program Files\Microsoft Small Business Server\Networking\ICW
directory.

If the config.vbs file is missing, the CEICW will create a new file and
continue the steps. So that's not the root cause of the issue.

The problem occurs when the SBS setup has not finished successfully. If the
problem cannot be resolved at last, you need to rerun the Integrated set up
wizard with changes in installation preferences. Thanks for your
understanding.

Please take the following steps to see if the problem can be resolved:

Step 1: Please run the following commands to re-register the wizards
related dlls.

Cd c:\Program files\Microsoft Windows Small Business Server\Networking\ICW

Regsvr32 wizcert.dll
Regsvr32 wizemail.dll
Regsvr32 wizinet.dll
Regsvr32 wizproxy.dll
Regsvr32 wizrfire.dll

Cd c:\Program files\Microsoft Windows Small Business
Server\Networking\RRASWiz

Regsvr32 wizrras.dll

The test if the problem is resolved.

Step 2: Please check if icw.exe is in the default directory.

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows Small Business Server\networking\ICW

If the problem persists, please help me collect the following information
for further research:

1. Send me c:\Program Files\Microsoft Small Business
Server\Support\icwlog.txt.

2. Run ipconfig /a >c:\ipconfig.txt and send c:\ipconfig.txt to me.

Please send the information to v-robeli@microsoft.com with subject:
40165358-config.vbs missing - ICW.exe won't run -> Unspecified Error.

I am looking forward to hear from you.

If you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to let me know

Hi Brad,Thanks for your reply. In the ipconfig.

Hi Brad,

Thanks for your reply.

In the ipconfig.txt, I noticed you have single NIC, please ensure you ran
the CEICW wizard as the following steps:

1. On the SBS 2003 Server open the Server Management console. Go to
Standard Management\To Do List.

2. Click the "Connect to the Internet" link.

3. On the "Web Server Certificate" page, choose to create a new Web server
certificate and then type the public FQDN that you will use to access OWA
(for example, if your public FQDN that you use to access the sites is
mail.domain.com, you should type mail.domain.com as the new certificate
name). If you already requested a certificate with the name
certificate from a trusted authority" and then import the certificate.

4. Go through the remaining steps.

More info:

2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=825763

Please take the following steps to see if the problem can be resoved:

Step 1: The error code 0x8004011d in icwlog.txt means the server is not
available. Please check if the SMTP service is running.

1. Run services.msc command.
2. Go to Simple Mail Transport Protocol(SMTP).
3. If the SMTP service is not started, click Start.
4. Try again.

Step 2: "Error 0x80040154 returned from call to RegisterMSBOExchangeBP()."
Occurs when msboexbp.dll is not registered.

Please run the following command to register the dll.

Cd C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows Small Business Server\Networking
Regsvr32 msboexbp.dll

Step 3: Some virtual directory in IIS is missing or pointing to the wrong
path. Please refer to the following article to reset IIS setting to default
and try again.

How to reset the default virtual directories that are required to provide
Outlook Web Access, Exchange ActiveSync, and Outlook Mobile Access services

If the problem persists, please help me collect the following information
for deep research:

1. icwlog.txt

2.IIS Metabase:

1) Download the IIS Resource Kit tools from the following page:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=56FC92EE-A71A-4C73-
B628-ADE629C89499&displaylang=en
2) Install it, run MBExplorer (Metabase Explorer)
3) Right click the "LM" node and choose "Export to file".
4) Specify a file name, specify the password and finish the export.
5) Send the file and the password me.

I am looking forward to hear from you.

If you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to let me know.
