Howdy!
I am having a problem adding a Win2k8 server to a Win2k3 domain. There
is one domain controller in this forest and it is running SBS 2003. When
I attempt to run adprep /forestprep off the Win2k8 x32 CD, this is the
error message I am getting:
********************
Updating change from:" International ISDN Number (Others)" to
inetOrgPerson-Display and property attributeDisplayNames.
Adprep was unable to complete because the call back function failed.
[Status/Consequence]
Error message: Cannot change thread mode after it is set.
(0x80010106).
[User Action]
Check the log file ADPrep.log, in the
C:\WINDOWS\debug\adprep\logs\20091117155746 directory for more
information.
Adprep set the value of registry key
System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NTDS\Parameters\ Schema Update Allowed
to 0
Adprep was unable to update forest information.
[Status/Consequence]
Adprep requires access to existing forest-wide information from the
schema master in order to complete this operation.
[User Action]
Check the log file, ADPrep.log, in the
C:\WINDOWS\debug\adprep\logs\20091117155746 directory for more
information.

This comes from the adprep.log. I have uninstalled Symantec Antivirus and
all related components from the server. I have used Process Explorer to
look for any processes that have a lock on LDIF.log (using the full
path) and did not find any processes that have a lock on it. I was able
to change the name of the file without any problem, so it does not look
like anything is using it.
I have a number of directories under the C:\WINDOWS\debug\adprep\logs\
area for each day I have tried running adprep /forestprep.
I have checked the startup processes using msconfig and disabled a few
things I did not see as necessary and rebooted - still a no go.
dcdiag and netdiag come back with perfect results. I am running as a
member of the schema admin group and checked that this server holds all
the FSMO roles in the domain. This is the only domain controller and I'd
like to get rid of it after I transfer everything to a new server
running Windows Server 2008. Any ideas? This is driving me crazy.
