Migrating to New Forest

Asked By TSDept

Looking for a little guidence. I have two separate forests, each in a
different location, each with its own 2003 domain, 2003 domain
controller and Exhange 2003 server. The goal is to combine Exchange
servers for the purpose of sharing GAL, Calendars and Public Folders (as
per upper management). When all is said and done, we would like to keep
the existing domain controllers and Exchange server at both the parent
and remote sites (remote site with child servers). We would also like
to keep the server names the same. The remote site has 30 application
servers, 150 users, a lot of share resources, web hosting, FTP sites,
database hosting, etc. What is the best way to approach this without
completely blotching up the enitre network?

I guess I need to migrate all user accounts, ad objects, SIDs from the
remote DC to the parent DC first. Discommission the remote DC and bring
back as a secondary DC in the parent forest.
I hope there is a different easier method for the Exchange server
joining the parent Exchange organization. I hate to migrate or move
mailboxes accross a PTP T-1 to the parent server, then move them back
once the remote Exchange is reconfigured as a child Exchange server.

Any guidence on this would be greatly appreciated.

Hello TSDept,

For the domains you can use ADMT v3:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=B1F816C0-4E2B-4E5D-B256-1AC304062367&displaylang=en

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=6F86937B-533A-466D-A8E8-AFF85AD3D212&displaylang=en

For Exchange you have to do a cross forest migration or use Exmerge to export
the mailboxes to .pst file and import the .pst into the other Exchange organisation.
Also you can use "Exchange Migration Wizard".

Thank you for your reply Meinolf.

I assume once I have migrated everything over to the parent
forest/organization I will have to decommission the remote site domain
controller and Exchange server, then rebuild both as child servers
(keeping existing server names) in the remote site. If so, once the
Exchange is reconfigured as a child, I assume I need to migrate the
mailboxes back to the Exchange server at the remote site. I prefer to
have the mailboxes at the remote site if possible. The access for the
end user will be much slower if left on the parent server.

Thank you!!!
