Windows Server - Desktop problem

Asked By Frank on 11-Mar-12 05:21 AM
For some reason when booting up, my desktop became corrupted with all my
shortcut icons having disappeared from the Taskbar (to the right of
Start button), as well as some of the labels of icons on the desktop
itself missing, and non-functional . I restored the system state from a
backup and the desktop now looks normal with the icon names restored and
all working again, except the shortcut icons on the Taskbar are still
missing. Furthemore I can no longer place shortcut icons on the taskbar.

Is there a registry hack to get round this problem?

That part with shortcuts is the "Quick Launch" Toolbar. Right-click on
the Taskbar/Toolbar/See if "Quick Launch" is ticked. If not ticked, it
will not be activated/visible and you would not be able to drag shortcuts.

You can also type the below path under the Windows Explorer's Address
bar "or" at Start/Run

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application
Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

to open the folder that contains the previous shortcuts. You can also
copy shortcuts over here that automatically appear on this toolbar.
Replace Administrator to whichever Username you are logging-in to.

No idea on any registry hack.

There is a small portable App "DesktopOK" through which you can save
the desktop layout/s and restore whenever changed (specially after
logging-in to safe mode that disrupts the layout because of lower
resolution).

Thanks. That's all it was, and everything is running normal now.

Good to know that it worked so "Quick".
