Windows Server - why is win2000 much faster in safe mode?

I dragged an old PC out of the cellar, triple boot 98SE,
2000 and linux. It goes okay in 98SE and linux, but is
slow in 2000 unless I boot safe mode, then it runs like
a racing car. So I tried disabling the extra stuff in
normal boot: anti-virus guard, USB printer driver, graphics
card control panel etc.
But it is still sluggish. So what is the likely culprit?
(K6-3+ at 672 MHz and 512 MB RAM CAS2
it has post-SP4 rollup)

Hello George,

Safe mode starts with the minimum needed services and drivers, that is the
reason.

You can use AutoRuns or msconfig to disable items till you find the culprit
but it also may be some combination.

Of course win2k does not have msconfig

but it can be "imported" from your win98 installation

(the XP version of msconfig may be better)

Hi, Dave.

I am having the same problem, except my computer freezes after 5 - 7 minutes.
I can not use msconfig in safe mode or normal mode. The system cannot find
the file to run it. If I were to use AutoRuns, How would I know what process
to end ?? I have no idea what some of these processes are or what some of the
things mean.

Windows 2000 does not come with MSCONFIG. You would need to acquire a
copy from someone with Windows XP
