Windows Server - Losing connection to Vista 64 machine

Hi,

I have a LAN with a couple of Vista machines (one 32 bit the other 64 bit),
and a W2K SP4 machine. Every now and then (like maybe once a day at some
point). the W2K machine suddenly for no apparent reason loses contact with
the Vista 64 machine. It can still see it, but I cannot access it from the
W2K machine. I can go the other way OK, and the 32-bit machine can access
either of the other 2 machines, and vice versa. The only way I have found so
far is to reboot the V64 machine, which is a real pain.

I tried booting up the V64 machine in safe mode with networking as advices
byt Microsoft support, but that did not resolve the lack of connection (though
a full reboot did), so they advised me to try this newsgroup to see if anyone
here can
help.

Any ideas at all as to what I should try?

Hello AliSmith,

Please post an unedited ipconfig /all from both machines so we can exclude
DNS as a problem. Also from the machine providing DNS functionality in your
network, server/router?

Thanks for your very speedy response!

I will let you have the ipconfig as soon as the problem happens again (which
could be any time today!).

Regarding DNS, I thought I had set up my router (192.168.1.1) as my DNS
server, but looking at the current ipconfig on the Vista machine, it says it
is using 216.146.35.35 and 216.146.35.36. Is this significant?

OK, I have reset the DNS server address on my Viosta machine to my router,
192.168.1.1, and will see what happens now, whether the problem appears
again. Fingers crossed!

Thanks for your help. I will let you know either if the problem reappears, or
if not by the end of tomorrow, that it seems to be fixed!

Interesting, after a bit of time (I only noticed after 20 minutes or so), the
DNS server address had been reset for the LAN to the external 216... address,
and my W2K machine had once again stopped seeing the Vista machine. I reset
the DNS server address back to my router's address (192.168.1.1) and the W2K
machine can once again talk to the Vista machine fine.

So this begs the question - what is changing my Vista 64 bit machine's DNS
server address? I note that this also seems to be happening on the Vista 32
bit machine, so is this a Vista 'enhancement' or what?

I thought all was well, but the problem has happened again. This time both
macvhines are showiung 192.168.1.1 as their DNS server address. So here are

In fact I found that just restarting the LAN resolved the problem (which is
presumably what happened when I changed the DNS address to a local one
before)?

I had same issue, and i found what it was doing this
you have dyndns updater from dyndns.com
the ip adresses belong to them, you will have to uninstall the software from
them and everything will be fine
