2242 error in a workgroup...
Asked By Jess Fertudei

I do not know much about networking and have an issue.
I posted about a month ago about a workgroup that I have here. I built a box
with Win2000 Pro with several partitions for an always on network storage. I
mapped two of the other machines (XP Home on both) in the workgroup to see
those partitions and all has been working well. Now both machines get an
error when trying to connect to the network drives:
Microsoft Windows 2242: The password of this user has expired
This connection has not been restored"
I did not change anything, I can see the drives from network places and etc.
I just cannot access anything. I have tried rebooting everything clean down
to the router and starting the 2000 box first and then the others and no
joy.
What happened?
How do I fix it?
How do I keep from having this happen again????
Thanks for any suggestions.

You're dealing with the usual problem of tyring to give an "outsider" access
to a shared resource without properly controlling his authority. it is like
tolerating a stranger walking freely about your house. Here is a simple way
to fix the problem:
- Let's assume you are normally working on PC1.
- Let's also assume that you are logging on as Jess.
- Let's further assume that your shares reside on PC2.
You must now create an account "Jess" on PC2 whose password (which must not
be blank!) matches the password you use when logging on as Jess on PC1.
Furthermore you must ensure that the passwords for Jess do *not* expire on
either machine. Lastly you must ensure that both the share and the NTFS
permissions of the shared folder on PC2 give Jess full read/write access.
Thanks for the reply. This is basically how I was set up.

Thanks for the reply.
This is basically how I was set up. How does a password expire and how do I
renew it? That seems to be the question now, I guess.
Password expire for security reasons. To see how to manage them, use Google.

Password expire for security reasons. To see how to manage them, use Google.
When you type this into a Google search box:
password expire "Windows 2000"
then your first hit is likely to be the relevant Microsoft page that gives
you a step-by-step explanation. If you simply wish to change a password
(=renew it), press Ctrl+Alt+Del, then tick the appropriate box.
I looked at the links as you suggested and found one that really helped.

When I googled I used the whole error message and found others with the
problem who did not know either, LOL...
All I had to do is turn off password expiration in Control Panel, Manage,
expand users and change the expiration settings for all users one by one and
it all started working like a charm again.

Thanks for the feedback - glad you got your problem resolved. I could, of
course, have given you the link you found yourself, or told you exactly how
to make passwords non-expiring. Using this insider knowledge would have left
you none the wiser when tripping over the next problem. Using Google you
should be able to deal with the next one on the spot. As some people say,
