Asked By bm

I have a network between my desktop and my laptop and backup my data
successfully between the two
However when I looked at the list of files which are shown on my Desktop
network the files are different from the files on the desktop
The laptop network files are correct as in the laptop
When I look at the laptop again the files on the laptop network are correct
but the files on the desktop network are different
What can be causing this?

You need to supply more details:
- What tool do you use to back up your files?
- What is the name of at least one of the files that is causing a problem?
- When you say "different", do you mean
a) The number of files
b) The size of the files
c) The date stamp of the files
e) The contents of the files

Thank you for your reply
I realise now what a mess I made of my problem
Let me say first of all I mentioned backup to explain why I really have a
network between the laptop and the desktop. I have absolutely no problem
with my backup. It works perfectly.
I will talk only about the problem with the desktop data
On my desktop I have my own data seperated in it is own partition and I have
about 37 folders
When I open the network on the laptop and look at the desktop my own data
shows only 3 folders
I had assumed that when I look at the desktop from the laoptop I would see
the same 37 folders!
Hope that explains the problem better

I think we are interposing the term "network," meaning looking at network
resources, such as viewing data on another machine on the network in a
folder that is been shared out, and the term "desktop," which means what is on
your current Desktop, meaning your desktop in front of you (that has the
Start menu, Recycle bin, etc) in your Windows profile. Based on that with
the terminology provided, I am having difficulty understanding and following
what you are saying.

What "network" are you opening up? Is it Network Neighborhood, or is it a
Mapped Drive letter that is pointing to a share on another computer?

Are you backing up data to your Desktop?

Are you trying to "copy" data from another machine to your laptop?

I have no problems backing up my data on my Desktop to my laptop ( The
Laptop is used primarily as a backup tool)
Actually I have no real problem apart from an academic one
When I open Windows Explorer on my Laptop and check on my neighbourhood
network and select the Desktop it does not show the correct list of folders
I have on the Desktop This does not cause any problem but leaves me baffled
why this should happen
Alternatively when I open Windows Explorer on my Desktop and check on my
Neighborourhood network and select Laptop the correct list is shown!

Thank you for your considered reply.
I think I am guilty of expressing myself badly using terms which can have
several meanings.
I will try again,
I have a backup system Acronis True Image which works perfectly and I have
no trouble with it,
I use my second Computer to store my backup from Computer 1
The process makes use of my Network which shows the structure of the second
computer and enables me to select the correct file for my backup
This works perfectly.
It is only when I look at the structure of the rest of the computer that I
noticed it does not correspond to the structure actually in the computer.
It does not cause me any problem apart from an academic point of view which
makes me wonder why this should be?
Hope this makes it clearer

I see. I apologize for misunderstanding your posts. I am still not sure by
what you mean "sructure" in the following statement:. I guess that would
involve knowing w

I

This can all be due to what you have actually shared on your machine
including the share and NTFS permissions, as well as if using legacy sharing
or Guest access sharing. If I have further misunderstood, I apologize. I am
having problems grasping your technical terminology in order to apply a
solution or explanation.

There is much involved with troubleshooting Windows sharing features and the
browse service without knowing specfic machine and network settings and
services configurations. It may be caused by other factors based on your
network configuration, if using WINS, firewalls, antivirus interfering, etc.

I have no further explanation other than possibly the browser service having
issues.

Possibly someone else that is monitoring this thread may have have a better
answer or explanation for you.

Thanks for you help
Structure was the wrong word -I meant a list if items
To simplify if I open Windows Explorer on my Desktop PC I get a list of
items on the PC
If I scroll down to Network and look at the same PC some of the items listed
are different which puzzled me
When I open Windows Explorer on my Laptop PC and look at the same PC under
Network the items are identical as I would have expected.
