No. (Not a problem to have more than one AV app installed but only 1 should
be loading at boot and providing real time protection.)

Yes, Avast4 is better than AVG IMHO, and Avira AntiVir is better than
Avast4.

can i assume that Avira AntiVir, since it is now a bootup program, offers
more protection in real time than Avast or Avg? mark gill

I feel AntiVir is a more robust application, Mark, in that it can detect and
remove many "Bad Guys" that neither AVG nor Avast can.

Guys,

I heard that Kaspersky is good too. How's that?
I am planning to replace my AVG as well. Please advice. Thanks.

Kaspersky is the BEST. However, there is NO free version directly from Kaspersky but AOL is
supplying a free version. Just don't install the AOL crap that comes with it.

Hi markgill:
I use AVG free edition (with XP Professional) and don't
have problems with it. By the way, if you need a free spyware they've
launched 'AVG Anti-Spyware Free'

I've listed here more FREE tools for you:

'Avast!' (http://www.avast.com)
'PC Tools Antivirus' (http://www.pctools.com/free-antivirus)
'Bit Defender 8, free edition' (http://tinyurl.com/7u74q)
'Kaspersky Lab Free Virus Scan'
'Infected Or Not' (http://www.infectedornot.com)
'Panda ActiveScan'

etc.
etc.
etc.

However You have to differentiate them. For example...
Free BitDefender v8 is an "On Demand" scanner only and doees NOT provide "On Access"
scanning.

AntiVir, Avast and AVG are fully installed anti virus applications that do perform both "On
Demand" and "On Access" scanning. It is On Access scanning that protects you. On Demand
only scanners are used AFTER you think you may be infected for detection and removal or for
supplementing a fully installed anti virus application like AntiVir, Avast and AVG.

The above are quite different from Panda ActiveScan which is a web based online On Demand
scanner and has Browser dependencies.

The online scanner from Kaspersky http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner is a detect only
scanner. It will not clean/remove what is found.

You lump all of the above together as if they were all the same. They aren't!

BTW: http://www.infectedornot.com is just an affiliate program that points back to Panda
ActiveScan.

I use the AVG Pro latest version on Windows XP SP2 MCE and just this
afternoon came up with Trojan Horse SHeur.AFJ. Logically it had installed
itself in Quicken 2005, which as luck would have it, I hadn't started to use,
woot! So if it sent anything it was blank spreadsheets. All 4 files were
deleted w/o problem. I'd like to know how it got past ZoneAlarm though, that
program sometimes alarms om MS Update files. I'm certainly going to let them
know about that.

It could have been a False Positive as it was a heuristic detection.

The files should have ben quarantined not deleted.

If you still had the files we could have tested them to see if if they were False Positives.
Now that they are gone, it is too late :-(
